Can you describe the moment you wanted to capture?
While thinking about the ‘natural green’ colour of this issue I was drawn to how the notion of nature and ‘the natural’ has changed. I feel that many, myself included, get this romantic idea of a natural world that is pristine, pure, and, most importantly, untouched. Although once true, this isn’t our world; our global society ravishes the natural world for everyday consumerism, our ice sheets are increasingly unstable, and we knowingly combust the fuel that is heating our ‘boiling frog’ reality.
This is nothing new, all this being widely reported, and we’re subject to a constant bombarding of the latest statistics: be it another species gone extinct, or yet another month breaking the ‘hottest month EVER’ on record. This information is not only commonplace, but has somehow also rendered us complacent. Though I’ve highlighted a pretty bleak outlook, the world keeps spinning as ever. But humans seem to have fundamentally changed what constitutes the ‘natural’. That’s something I wanted to incorporate for this submission, both a celebration of the romanticism that I hold, but also a nod to our subliminally knowing that it’s fake.
Where were you when you realised you wanted to make this piece of art?
In a lecture, obvs paying close attention to my education.
