What have you learnt since creating this piece?
Writing this post-Trump’s election, a pretty poignant thing I’ve learnt is democracy cannot be one-sided; I definitely don’t like the result, but there can’t now be talks of overthrowing Trump and implicitly buying into his ‘rigged system’ rhetoric. There can be disagreement and action, but not in a way that perpetuates a state of political hypocrisy and distrust.
I’ve also since found out you can buy a kilo of fusilli pasta from tescos for 3 pounds, so not sure which is the real life lesson here.

Can you describe the moment you wanted to capture?
What I really wanted to capture was the textures. I’ve had a fascination with them for a while now and find the way they can simultaneously convey visual and tactile aesthetics really compelling. With the colour ‘blazer red’, velvet was a no brainer – I think you can already feel velvet just by seeing it.
For these pieces, I wanted to juxtapose that with a subject that was both soft and sharp; the figures and their features appearing harsh against the softness of the velvet.
Where were you when you realised you wanted to make this piece of art?
It all happened pretty serendipitously, some friends and I were listening to the new Bon Iver LP together. I happened across the velvet and the idea of what I wanted from the images of fell into place. I was also working on a different project with the guy hosting so had my camera with me anyway so got to shoot the pictures right away.
