Can you describe the moment you wanted to capture?

When given the theme of this LUX edition, my mind instantly jumped to the fact that red is not only a very sensual colour, but also one that is closely embodied in human beings as part of our anatomy. I therefore wanted to combine these two thoughts in  a painting inspired closely by the artist Emilio Villalba. The painting, although not directly using the colour red, links the emotive quality of the colour – in the sensuality associated with the mouth – with the innate association that is unconsciously made of “red lips”.

Where were you when you realised you wanted to make this piece of art?

I was at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery “Facing the World” exhibition – a collection of self portraits from some of the most celebrated artists to have lived.

Were you listening to music when you created this piece?

Yes – a strange mixture of Frank Ocean and Tom Misch; two completely unique and complex artists with huge musical talent.

Where do you dream of living?

Florence, one of the few cities where you are truly surrounded by art.

What does red remind you of?

Passion, strength, blood, love.
